Thivya M R on Starting Something New

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

We all get ideas, have dreams, and set goals. However, in order to make things come to pass in our life we have to start the project. Starting isn’t always easy and we tend to get stuck in the phase right before starting – dreaming! This week I spoke to a dear friend of mine Thivya MR on this topic of starting something new and she had some very good advice to give on this.

Thivya is a 23-year-old startup entrepreneur working full time as a banking advisor, part time student in Fashion Marketing, self-taught makeup artist and a content creator. Yes, she has a lot on her plate and is the perfect person to ask on how she got everything started.

6 months ago, Thivya sat down and noted where she wanted to be today. She jotted down her plans and goals in order to get an idea of where she was going. However, she did not follow it. If she did, her project wouldn't ever have started. She did not sit and wait for her perfect business plan to fall in place with the right timing to get started. From experience, there is no such thing as the perfect business plan and time. If you wait for it, you will never get started. What is most important in every plan is to really know where you are going and to take the first step towards it. This explains how she has started her new business - Fantaisie Cosmetics : Lash Lounge with all that she already has going on. Fantaisie Lash lounge is located in the heart of Montreal and you can go to get eye lash extensions and eye lash lifts done. Book your appointment here.

Thivya said “I admire how I do not think twice. I am not afraid to throw myself into something new. Debt is to not be afraid of. Overthinking will cause you to be scared all the time and will not allow you to do anything ever. Therefore, I manage everything to a certain point where I know I will not freak out. I keep track of what I do all the while taking a risk.”

For anyone looking for motivation to start a project or anything new in life from the littlest of things to the biggest of projects, Thivya suggests that you get familiar with the basics of the matter. Don’t throw yourself blindly into the project. For example, for any business project you need to know how to manage your money. That is essential! You don’t want to start working with money when you do not know how to handle it. That would be nothing but dangerous. There are various resources to go get information in 2018 as the internet has so much information on it from people with prior experience. Personally, Thivya learnt a lot from Google and from working as an advisor at the bank. If you did not know already, you can walk into any bank and ask for an appontment to speak to a financial advisor who will help you for FREE to get organized with your money. By working at the bank, Thivya has learnt a lot about money management. However, you need to make sure that the advisor you have is not using you to meet their quotas and is sincerely attempting to help you. You don’t want to walk out now with even more debt because they convinced you to get a credit card. Oh no! That is not the goal. Once you have the core right only then you can start the project. It's like taking the stairs. Everything is one step at a time. You need to take the first step for you to take the second.

Another tip Thivya has for us is the need to be organized in whatever you do. The hardest part about being a multi-faceted startup entrepreneur is managing your time. There are only 24 hours in a day where you need to sleep, eat, and in between handle all that is going on in your life. It is not easy! To be productive, get things started and moving you need to figure out what needs to be done and when. With all that Thivya is doing she really highlights this

fact. It is really important to be organized and scheduled. You need to schedule all the little things including sleep. The tasks become more daunting If you are not doing what you love.

Thivya remembers the first time she was curious about makeup and fell in love with it.

“I grew up with 2 older brothers and was really into the dude stuff like video games, Dragon Ball, Pokémon. However, I had 1 Barbie that made me want to learn more about the girly stuff. We can say that it all started with Barbie. At the age of 3, my best friend came over one time with lipstick. I wanted what the girl had so I took it. That was my earliest memory of falling in love with makeup. I was not allowed makeup till I was 12 years old. When I got my first job at 15 I bought the 120 eyeshadow palettes for 20$ off eBay. I would buy 1$ lipsticks on”

Thivya’s first video ever made was of herself in front of the camera with her mouth moving with no sound coming out but no one will ever see this because she was only testing the waters. All to say, you need to also love what you are going to do to have the drive to start.

Starting something new in life is not easy and honestly, the key to getting it done is just starting. No matter how fearful the situation may seem you need to start in order to get moving. Thivya’s 3 pointers to starting something new is:

1- Plan as to where you want to be and where you are heading. You can make it as detailed as possible. However, you will not wait for everything to be perfect before you start. It is nothing but a guide.

2- Get familiar with the basics of the project. As it is one step at a time, you need to be able to properly land on the first step for you to take the second. Not knowing the basics will cause you to fall before you even start.

3- Organize your time wisely. You need to sleep, eat, and give life to your project all in the span of 24 hours. There is no time to be wasted.

The next project you fear starting, remember that it is only through starting that you can get results and truly live a life worth telling others.
