Hey you are beautiful!

You look amazing when you tie your hair like that!

You are an amazing person!

This is what you are talented in!

I don’t shy away anymore from complimenting a stranger. I learnt for myself the power of a selfless compliment. What is that? Well, a selfless compliment is genuine compliment that you give without expecting to receive anything afterwards. Let me give you some more.

Your laugh is contagious.

You have a beautiful mind.

You inspire me to be a better person.

These words are the very words that builds people. The words that lasts a life time with someone. Working at a fast food restaurant, I have experienced firsthand the power in the words of the customer. From thank you to you are beautifully made has helped me be happier in the creation I am. Words change the world and that is why I blog. From a poster, to a message, to a blog post words change the world. People are dying for a compliment and to feel worthy.

When I think about the last time I got a compliment, it was a random janitor cleaning who saw me sitting there and told me I am very beautiful naturally. Do you know what that did for me? It instantly boosted my confidence, made me happy as I was down and gave me a reason to continue existing. Odd, I know. Exactly what the compliment did to me it does to everybody else as well. The power of a compliment inspires an internal shift from one end of the spectrum to another. It shows that you as an individual is noticed, is existent and somebody is there with you in that existential space.

If it is so powerful to give one life, why don’t we do more of it? That power is within each and every one of us. Simply put, we do not do this because we are so self-centered and not appreciative enough of the people surrounding us. To fix this we need to focus on our surroundings, including the human beings in it. We need to give out self-less compliments each time the opportunity arises. We need to make it a habit to compliment a person a day. This could be your form of doing good in this world. Try it! Start with the next person you meet.
